What are your thoughts on the Senate’s compromise immigration reform bill?

The current immigration agreement in the Senate looks to be a total catastrophe for the nation, and will prove to be a fiasco for GOP. The House needs to stop this legislation, just as it did last year.
If, and only if, the government demonstrates that our borders are sealed,& will remain sealed, should we deal with the illegals in our country.
We already have immigration laws, we just need to enforce them.
The only reason to pass “comprehensive immigration reform” is to allow immediate legalization/amnesty, then citizenship for tens of millions of people who do not respect our laws or want to integrate into our culture.
Kill it. Otherwise, you will lose my support & I’m sure a large base of the GOP voters – You will certainly become a minority party.
We were wrong to trust our politician’s words in 1965 & 1986 – not again!!!!
May 18, 2007 at 6:51 pm
It sounds like amnesty to me. I think Mitch M. should stop it in the Senate, and make the presidentioal candidates tell the country what they would do. No one should be allowed to start their U.S. citizenship by commiting a crime. Enering our country illegaly is a crime.

I think the Senate’s compromise reform immigration bill is appalling, degrading, unconstitutional, and a slap to all Americans, as well as legal immigrations earning citizenship. I have no confidence that the boarders will be enforced. The illegal Mexican immigrants will not go home when told to or pay their fine. A majority of illegal Mexicans immigrants do not have a high school diploma and do not/will not make enough to even pay taxes. As such, they will remain in the Welfare System, overcrowd our schools even more, become more of burden to our health care system, and make no effort to even speak English. Plus, their families will become citizens, and frankly, drug trading, drug use, and teen-age pregnancy will increase. Lastly, most of the illegal immigrants will register and vote Democratic. With the increase of Mexicans or Hispanics, white, Anglo-saxons will become the minority and the GOP will no longer be a political party. If the GOP does remian a political party, the conservative grass-roots efforts, policial agenda, and philosophy will never be the same. Simply, I think the Legislators and President Bush “sold out America.” I hope Americans honestly know and understand the consequences of this bill. SAY HELLO TO THE NEW NORTH AMERICA WITH TWO LANGUAGES, ONE LIBERAL-SOCIALIZED POLITICAL PARTY, AND UNEDUCATED CITIZENS WITH A HIGH CRIME RATE. SAY GOOD-BYE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, OUR CONSTITUTION, AND ANY VALUES THAT CURRENTLY REMAIN.
Honestly, I have no problems with anyone entering our Country legally. I have no problems with Hispanics. I do have a problem with people feeling they can enter our Country and then demand the same rights as American citizens. I have even more of a problem with Government officials who do not inforce the law, allow border guards to remain in prison for shooting a drug dealer, and then reward these illegal immigrants for breaking the law. OH, Bill Clinton, Hilary Clinton, Congressmen Jefferson from New Orleans, Nancy P., Kennedy, and others can break the law and be rewarded. Heck, why not millions of Mexicans? Frankly, President Bush just dug his own grave.

This current legislation before the Senate on immigration is a bad idea. This can not be good for the country to allow amnesty to those who knowingly broke our laws. It is a difficult problem in dealing with such a large number of people, but…… we must do right for our future generations and honor our past generations. My great-grandparents came here and went through the process like I am sure yours did also. So, why then would we want to allow our Mexican friends any other path?
Becoming an American should mean something. Not just a token moment of registration and then a little slap on the wrist and bingo you are now an American. We want and need immigrants to join us and become us. That means assimilation …….. by learning our language, becoming independent, and becoming an American first. I don’t see these time honored principals in anything I hear.
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…..it’s a duck. Have you all gone mad and forgot why you have been sent to represent us. Not the extremists left or right, not the very vocal minority positions, not to represent what has now become the socialist press, but to represent WE THE PEOPLE!
Let me get this straight….our politicians want to run away from protecting our country from enemies both foreign and domestic…..ignore the pending Medicare/social security crisis….and now they want to sell us down the river to those who crossed the river illegally! With representation like this who needs Islamic terrorists!
These are not my words, but I believe this speaks volumes about how I feel. The fact that we are even discussing this is troubling as we give credibility to lawlessness for some and not for others. The democrats will try to push this though to begin the process of enlarging their base of voters and secure their place in government.

Any illegal alien apprehended in this country should be deported. Not rewarded.
May 18, 2007 at 8:21 pm
The bill, to the extent anybody has really seen it, is terrible, but does serve to, once again, show how out of touch our legislators are with the realities on Main Street America. Have you ever been unable to get service because you spoke ‘only’ American English?
I’m told the phones are ringing off the hook at Congress, and that their email servers (receivers?) are jammed.
Ordinary Americans can beat this, and should. Make the phone calls, send the emails. And remember the legislators who support it: give them no support, and no dough; nothing but a primary opponent in 2008.
The battle for America has begun; whose side are you going to be on?

AMNESTY!!!!
When are Republicans going to learn that being buddy buddy with that drunk Kennedy is going to get them nowhere.
I busted my tail for the President and this is the thanks I get!!
I am a conservative and I understand compromise is a necessary evil but c’mon!
This bill is a joke and a slap in the face to all Americans whose ancestors legally immigrated into this great Country.
It amazes me that so many people can jump on the band wagon and supprot this.
It is just one of many ways that the Republican Party “leaders” are handing 2008 on a silver platter to the Dems.
Didn’t they learn in 2006? It wasn’t the Iraq war it was the pulling away from principles that our Party claims to represent. That is why so many stayed home last year or voted Democrat-they were ticked off at the Republicans.
I think the next time these Illegal Immigrants oops I a mean undocumented aliens have a big shindig let’s roll law enforcement in their with some flex cuffs and send them packing? I’ll pay five bucks a head for lettuce for the sake of knowing these law breakers are out of Dodge. (That is not a bigotted comment-that is literally the excuse businesses are giving for keeping them here!)
I wish our leaders would grow a spine or whatever other accoutrements they need to tell these Dems and whoever else is pushing stupid legislation like this to take a hike.
I hope someone steps forward to run between now and 2008 that truly has the best interests of our Country at heart and has the intestinal fortitude to say what is right and not be ashamed about it or apologetic.
Lord knows none of those running now do!

This is what Fred Thompson had to say today about the immigration bill. I approve of his message.

This is Bush’s attempt to destroy the Republican Party.
May 19, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Evidently the remaining GOP congressmen want to experience the 2004 elections again and again.
Did they not learn from the last election that when you do not listen to your consituents, they either vote for someone else, or as in 2004, DON’T VOTE AT ALL because they are so disgusted with the deafness of their so-called leadership?
Get ready for 20+ years of Dem domination, as long as the Republicans in office continue to have no backbone, and to support giving amnesty to crimininals. Millions of criminals. And their parents, spouses, and children.
I guess all the concern in Washington about our Social Security system is a bunch of baloney – because when these millions of illegals become eligible, THEY will finish off social security forever. If it can’t handle the legitimate retiring citizenry, how can it possibly take care of the illigitimate ones?
The illegals’ families will no doubt contain elderly parents who will wipe out what little remains of OUR social security, leaving those of us who have contributed for the last 40 years, to see it all go to hispanics, while we ‘non-hispansic whites’ (yes, that is the current government terminology officially used to describe those of us of European descent – NON-HISPANIC WHITES!!!! – we will lose our entire social security investment, and we have already lost our identity.
We need term limits and we need to kick the rest of the RINOS out of office. They are scum, they are an offense to this country, and they are embarrassments to this once-great Republican party. As is the president and McCain and everyone else who participates in this disgusting charade.

Dear GOP,I feel betrayed and come next election cycle i will do what ever i can to get all signers out of office.I for one will not stand by and let this happen without a fight.Patrick

My feelings are best expressed by the clip, if it sounds like amnesty, and it looks like amnesty and it has the same affect as amnesty then it really is amnesty for millions of people. I have very little faith that our elected officials have the guts to stand up and stop the flow of illegal Mexican immigrants. They don’t seem to hear the call of the people to stop the flow across the border. I’m supprised terrorist don’t buy charter flight tickets to Mexico City and walk across the U.S. border after all the have the example of ten million Mexicans who were sucessful at entering the U.S. Why they could even get citizenship plus an ACLU lawyer to defend them if they come before congress passes this stupid bill. Below are some facts recently published in the L.A. Times
1. 40% of all workers in L.A. County (L.A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants working without a green card.
2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.
5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.
6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.
7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.
8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.
9. 21 radio stations in L.A. are Spanish speaking.
10. In L.A. County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish.(There are 10.2 million people in L.A. County).
(All of the above are from the Los Angeles Times)
Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are on welfare. Over 70% of the United States’ annual population growth (and over 90% of California, Florida, and New York) results from immigration.
29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.
We are a bunch of fools for letting this continue.

I have already sent emails AND snail mail to our “senators” telling them if they vote for this amnesty bill we the people will vote them out of office. A grassroots effort is needed here to demand this thing get killed now!!
I’ve also send McCain the same to advise him it’s time for him to 1) drop out of the race and 2) to go ahead and switch parties now since he has no credibility left.

I thought that this board was supposed to be used to spur debate amongst our Party faithful but I guess I was wrong…my last comment was moderated off, I guess because I was too specific with my criticisms of the Party that I work so hard for.
I simply spoke what most of us feel is our Party’s turn for the worst and my disappointment that all of my hard work seems to be for naught when none of our leaders realize that this move away from our Party’s philisophical tenants is why we continually get beat not only in polls but elections.
How many do you know who are saying the same thing they said in 2006. “I’m not going to vote in protest of what our Party is doing.”
I think it is time we all wake up and realize that yes grassroots is great but until we seek out candidates that stand by our Party’s philosophy, not just during election years, that grassroots base will be hard to build without a candidate to get behind.
I will find somewhere else to voice my opinions I guess but I will continue to fight for what I feel is ideologically where our Party should be, whether it ruffles feathers or not.

In all likelihood, I will say nothing new about the immigration bill; however, it merits comment. The bill also raises more questions than it answers.
Yes, it is true that a sizeable majority of illegal immigrants have come to the land of opportunity for a better life. It is also true that one’s compassion might—might—dictate an outright amnesty. And it is also true that we have a labor shortage in certain sectors of the economy.
But none of these factors warrants the response that is the new immigration bill.
One might ask, Why? For starters, we are a nation of laws, and absent the rule of law, liberty becomes somewhat suspect—i.e. if the rules are known in advance, then no group or person can alter the terms of the game in favor of certain people. Furthermore, changing a law ex post facto because we have not enforced it does not solve the problem—it only encourages more of the illegal behavior.
Secondly, one must ask how will the bill be enforced? Why will illegal immigrants come forward, pay fines, and go to the back of the line in order to be legal when they already have a good thing going? My guess is that they will not (this without delving into the provisional amnesty).
Lastly, we have already tried similar measures in the past. Then—1986—there were far fewer illegal immigrants, perhaps three million. The deal went like so: amnesty for those present in exchange for enforcement of the law and a sealed border. Twenty years later the number of illegal immigrants has increased…exponentially.
So here we are again, with the same problem, only more so, and the same solution—which is no solution at all. I don’t pretend to know the magic bullet answer (because no such bullet exists), but I do know that history is repeating itself; and if it does so again, we may be engaged in this very same debate twenty years from now with three times as many illegal immigrants, even if the dynamics of the situation differ.

I am disgusted by everything I’ve read and heard about this Senate bill. Why are Republican politicians doing everything in their power to ensure the party is destroyed? They can’t just keep trusting that people will hold their noses and vote for them instead of Democrats; if last November teaches them anything it should be that they need to give us a reason to vote for them.
And President Bush, what are YOU thinking? You are such a strong leader in the war on terror, but you have this huge blind spot when it comes to criminal aliens. The border is part of our national security, and illegal aliens are here ILLEGALLY.
Secure the border and start taking down businesses that knowingly hire criminals. Seize ill gotten gains. Cut off the demand for illegals by ruthlessly punishing businesses that are hiring illegals. Take a stand for the RULE OF LAW, for crying out loud.
Senate Republicans need to start acting like conservatives, not playing these stupid political games that will ensure the party’s destruction.

I am disappointed my comments got taken down too. It doesn’t matter. Ordinary Americans can and will beat this.

GOP stealth presidential primary candidate Fred Thompson delivered a speech to the National Resauraunt Association today predicting defeat of the senate’s immigration reform bill. The article below sets forth Fred’s view on a variety of topics. Required reading if you’re interested in the GOP’s eventual nominee for November,2008. Unless this grand country has gone completely down the tubes, I predict this man can handily defeat Hillary or any other Democrat. Please sit up, take notice, and consider what Fred has to say.

On May 22nd House Minority Leader John Boehmer weighed in on the immigration reform bill. Speaking to a group of Republican activists Boehmer said…”I promised the President that I would not say anything bad about…this piece of sh*t bill.” I couldn’t have described the bill in any better terms.

I agree with 95+% of the comments on this blog about the immigration reform bill. It encourages me that there are still many who are really aware of what is going on, despite the incessant barrage of misinformation from the socialist/neo-marxist propaganda organs called the major media. Don’t think I can add much more, but perhaps express my cynicism. I just find it incredible that we have to continuously struggle against so much incompetent, self-serving politics that is rampant in our government these days. There is absolutely NO real governance going on in our nation’s capital–their ONLY concern is how to get elected next time around. How long can our nation continue like this? I say we better all get off our duffs and turn this around real soon…!
May 24, 2007 at 6:57 pm
I’ve sent out E-mails to the county & state GOP, but no answer – anybody got any idea if they have taken a position?
Guess all the politicians will only read the bill after it’s passed…it would be criminal if they knew the details & still voted “yes”.
Not much “Grand” about the party anymore!
May 26, 2007 at 2:07 pm
It saddens me to see our leadership in Washington turn a deaf ear to the overwhelming lack of support by us back home to this travesty of a bill. If it passes, I fear that America, as we know it is soon to come to an end. What the enemies from without have failed to accomplish over the grand history of our country, those from within will soon see success and for all intents and purposes, an end to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as we have know it. As Robert Bork so astutely observed, we are not only slouching toward Gomorrah legally & constitutioally, but culturally as well.

Both our US Senators voted yesterday stop an ammendment which would have stopped amnesty for illegals who have been deported form the US – gang menbers & other undesirables. This is insane!!
I checked the Ohio Constitution, but did not find any reference to recall procedures. This seems to be more & more necessary…

Dateline: Washington, DC:
The Amnesty Bill (aka the Senatorial Criminal/Jihadist Assistance Act of 2007) has been defeated. Again.
Just a brief note to those of you who took the time and expended energy to contact your elected reps to express your deep seated disapproval of a very flawed piece of legislation that the “elected elites” tried to stuff down the throat of the American people.
When you hear or are told you’re a hateful, bigoted, nationalistic moron because you stood firm in favor of border security and US sovernigity…just smile at the accuser knowing in your heart your cause is just.

Cough…cough…ahem….I misspelled “sovereignty” in my last post. Sorry.

Again, I am encouraged by the astute comments of fellow bloggers. Washington also shows signs of hope after they rejected voting on the amnesty for ill-legal immigrants bill this week.

After listening to Vonivich on the radio the day before he voted no on the Immigration bill I was embarrased for him. He came across as an uninformed idiot. He had no clue what the “Fairness Doctrin” is. He thought he voted for an ammendment when he actually voted against it. He thought it passed when in fact it had failed. He basically said he would vote his way and if we didn’t like it we could take it up at the polls. He had not read the bill but only a summery of it. For me he is history!
